Application
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to construct set elements that are operated through mechanical devices in the screen, media, entertainment and events industries.
Individuals who apply these skills work autonomously in a team environment as they take responsibility for ensuring that mechanical set pieces meet the creative requirements of productions. They may be responsible for supervising others.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Elements and Performance Criteria
Elements Elements describe the essential outcomes. | Performance Criteria Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. |
1. Determine requirements for mechanical sets | 1.1 In consultation with relevant colleagues and with reference to production documentation, confirm requirements for mechanical sets 1.2 Discuss construction and safety issues associated with constructing mechanical sets and plan accordingly 1.3 Take budgets and other constraints into account when planning work 1.4 Reach agreement on scope of own work and construction deadlines 1.5 Update construction plans to take account of discussions as required |
2. Prepare for construction work | 2.1 Select equipment and materials based on the way in which mechanical set pieces are to be used 2.2 Consider different construction options and use those that will enhance the final outcome 2.3 Calculate quantities of required materials, avoiding waste where possible |
3. Complete construction work | 3.1 Follow construction plans to create mechanical set pieces, ensuring that safety procedures are followed at all times 3.2 Check items produced in terms of durability, quality of finish and suitability for production requirements 3.3 Seek feedback on work in progress and adjust construction techniques as required 3.4 Test operation of completed set pieces according to organisational requirements 3.5 Contribute to evaluations of set construction processes and note ways to improve own work performance |
Evidence of Performance
Evidence of the ability to:
construct set pieces that incorporate the use of mechanical devices for at least one production or event
follow safety procedures
meet work deadlines
work collaboratively.
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.
Evidence of Knowledge
To complete the unit requirements the individual must:
describe ways in which mechanical set pieces can be used in productions and events
describe issues and challenges that typically arise when constructing mechanical sets and suggest ways of addressing them
explain the mechanical principles behind the following devices commonly used to construct mechanical set pieces:
cables
fulcrums
levers
explain how common mechanical devices can be used to create different effects on stage
describe safety issues associated with materials, tools and equipment used to construct mechanical sets.
Assessment Conditions
Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:
equipment, tools and materials used to construct mechanical sets
a work area where mechanical set pieces can be constructed safely.
Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
Foundation Skills
This section describes language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills incorporated in the performance criteria that are required for competent performance.
Skill | Performance Criteria | Description |
Learning | 3.5 | Seeks the views of others to identify ways to improve own performance |

Writing | 1.5, 3.5 | Documents outcomes of evaluations |
Oral communication | 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 3.3, 3.5 | Obtains information by listening and questioning Uses clear language to express views Discusses ideas and solutions |
Numeracy | 1.3, 2.3 | Performs simple calculations when taking measurements and checking that expenditure on mechanical set elements meets budget allocations |
Navigate the world of work | 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2, 3.4 | Takes responsibility for decisions about when and how to complete tasks Takes responsibility for meeting health and safety requirements in relation to constructing mechanical sets within scope of own role Applies organisational procedures and meets expectations associated with own role |
Interact with others | 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 3.3, 3.5 | Works collaboratively |
Get the work done | 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4 | Adopts a methodical and logical approach to the process of constructing mechanical sets Manages time efficiently to meet work deadlines Assesses information and ideas about mechanical devices and plans the most effective way to meet production requirements Plans and organises own workload Makes decisions related to own role and takes responsibility for their outcomes |
